He was born in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, in late 1950s.
He found his true calling at age 18 during a trip to southern Europe, precisely Italy. He traveled without hurry all across it, and found himself experiencing a different life rythm and a new universe. He kept in his memory the image of people walking on their balconies like doing it on long catwalk. These small details and his harmony with the city of love helped reveal his true call; fashion design. In the 1970s he began studying Fashion Design at ABK, in Netherlands, now better known as ArteZ Arnhem University. After five years, he graduated with honors as fashion designer.
He decides to seek new experiences and travels to South America, settling in Montevideo, Uruguay. He opens a design and export business. At that time, he noticed that fashion in Uruguay was not very developed, and he decided to contribute as teacher at the Centro de Diseño Industrial in Montevideo. In the 90s he founded his own institute, Peter Hamers Design. Initially, taught design courses, then a design career was developed. Currently, the Peter Hamers - Fashion Design School has a professional career in fashion design and numerous specialized courses related to fashion.
He has collaborated countless times with different groups, institutions and individuals, always with the aim of contributing, accompanying and making visible different projects. A pioneer in the fusion of fashion and art, he knew how to forge and gain trust with his brand, opening doors to several people who today are dedicated to the different branches of local fashion. In 2021, the school moved to a large house in Ciudad Vieja, the center of all creative and artistic activity in Montevideo.
Currently he dedicates, with his cleverness and creative power, to one of the oldest plastic arts, sculpture, especially giving shape and expression to the torso of women, under the nickname of Petrus Hamers. In addition, this year he has been awarded at the Superindie Los Angeles Film Festival, with the award for "Best Costume Design" for the short film Por Ella by director Giuseppe Giacri.
I don't want the students to argue with me (in words). But I do want to be shown how wrong I am. If they can show me with images, maybe they will convince me that they are right. The facts show the skill, not their words, not mine. I am not afraid that my students will surpass me; on the opposite, I can't wait. Peter Hamers.
